The title Wyoming was first proposed for use in the American West by Senator Ashley of Ohio in 1865 in a monthly bill to develop a non permanent government for Wyoming Territory. Among the candidates considered together with Nixon have been Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft, New Jersey Governor Alfred Driscoll, and Illinois Senator Everett Dirksen. He managed helpful relations with his fellow anti-communist, controversial Wisconsin senator Joseph McCarthy, but was thorough to preserve some distance amongst himself and McCarthy's allegations. On his return to the United States at the finish of 1953, Nixon elevated the time he devoted to foreign relations. In his memoirs, Nixon wrote that he joined the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) "at the close of 1947". However, he was already a HUAC member in early February 1947, when he listened to "Enemy Number 1" Gerhard Eisler and his sister Ruth Fischer testify. Nixon first gained countrywide consideration in August 1948, when his persistence as a HUAC member served break the Alger Hiss spy situation. On February 18, 1947, Nixon referred to Eisler's belligerence towards HUAC in his maiden speech to the House.
