Hermaphroditism appeared in medical literature enough to be thought of common data, though circumstances were rare. Medical consideration of hermaphroditism depended upon measurements of the clitoris; an extended, engorged clitoris was thought to be used by women to penetrate different women. Not solely was an abnormally engorged clitoris thought to create lusts in some women that led them to masturbate, but pamphlets warning ladies about masturbation leading to such oversized organs had been written as cautionary tales. Penetration was the focus of concern in all sexual acts, and a woman who was thought to have uncontrollable needs due to her engorged clitoris was called a "tribade" (actually, one who rubs). Women in historic Greece were sequestered with one another, and men were segregated likewise. Historian Nancy Rabinowitz argues that historical Greek pink vase images which painting girls with their arms around another girl's waist, or leaning on a lady's shoulders could be construed as expressions of romantic desire.
