Karpov – the fortress of the Belgorod line, the center of the Karpovsky district (later renamed Bogatensky district).

The town was built on the Muravsky Shlyakh on the right bank of the Vorskla. The decree on the creation of the city was signed by the Moscow Tsar in 1637, the prison was erected in 1644. Its first inhabitants were 60 Rylsk and Sevsk archers. However, the prison was unable to stop the large Crimean Tatar horde (30 thousand), which invaded the Putivl district and captured several thousand prisoners. The construction of the city itself began in 1646 and was led by the governor V.P. Sheremetev. On the walls, 3 driveways and 6 blind towers were cut down. The perimeter of the fortress was 438 fathoms. The city was surrounded by a moat, a cache was dug to the river. In 1647, the garrison of the fortress city of Karpov consisted of 211 archers, 171 Cossacks, 43 gunners, 38 dragoons, 43 Cherkas, 4 collars. There were 21 cannons in the city. The first inhabitants of Karpov were from Kursk, Moscow, Mtsensk and Komaritskaya volost. In 1652, the Trinity-Solovetsky Monastery was founded in Karpov, within the walls of which the relics of Saints Zosima and Savvaty were kept (abolished in 1764).

In 1719 the city was included in the Belgorod province of the Kiev province, and in 1727 – in the Belgorod province, within which it was established Karpovsky district, which included the villages of Bogatoe, Rakitnoe and Tomarovka.

In 1779, in accordance with the decree of Catherine II „Establishment for the administration of the provinces of the All-Russian Empire" the city was assigned to the Kursk governorship and demoted to a village, and the city of Bogaty became the center of the district. Another center of the district life was the village of Tomarovka, which was located 5 versts southwest of Karpov. Also around Karpov there were formed „daughter" villages: Dragunskoe, Cossacks, Pushkarskoe and Streletskoe.
