Phimosis is a problem in which the foreskin can't be pulled back over the penis's head (the glans). This happens in nearly all newborns.

This could be caused by scarring or a tighter foreskin which makes the skin less elastic. Phimosis can be caused by infections and aging as well as other issues.

Causes

Phimosis is a disorder in which the foreskin cannot be pulled back over the head of the penis (glans). This is a normal occurrence in infants and toddlers. In older boys, it may result from scarring caused by a skin problem or injury.

A tight foreskin can interfere with urination and a healthy erection. It can also cause inflammation of the penis, referred to as balanitis, and inflammation of the glans as well as the foreskin (called balanoposthitis).

Phimosis is more prevalent in males who aren't circumcised. It could be a sign that another medical ailments are present, for example diabetes or lupus the sclerosis.

Scarring, sexually transmitted infections and poor hygiene in the early the child's life are all risk factors. The condition can be diagnosed by your child's doctor, who will examine your child's foreskin and penis. Your doctor might prescribe steroid creams or manual retraction and/or suggest surgery to fix the problem. Circumcision is a possibility for treatment but it is an incision that is invasive and has the potential for infection and bleeding.

Symptoms

Phimosis occurs when the foreskin fails to retract properly from the head of the penis (glans). It can happen during early childhood or later in life.

Phimosis is characterized by the swelling of the foreskin, or the ballooning of it when urination. This can cause the flow of urine to be reduced and other urinary problems, such as balanitis.

Some boys are born with phimosis, and it generally goes away by itself as they grow older. However, if symptoms continue to persist and your child is not getting relief, he should consult an expert.

A physical exam, reviewing your son's symptoms, and an examination of the penis discharge or urine could help identify phimosis. Depending on how severe the phimosis is, your son may need to use antibiotics or antifungal creams.

The most commonly reported sign of phimosis is swelling or bulging of the foreskin after urinating. This causes discomfort and makes it difficult for males to urinate.

Treatment

A child suffering from phimosis will typically manage the condition by themselves. They'll frequently remove their foreskin to ensure they can wash and urinate in a proper manner. If steroid creams fail to work, your doctor might recommend surgery to remove the foreskin to free the penis.

In most cases, phimosis treatment is not medically necessary especially for children under the age of. The risk of contracting infection and complications is very low. Depending on the severity of phimosis your healthcare provider may offer an alternative option such as gentle daily manual retraction or topical corticosteroid ointment application.

Phimosis that causes pain or discomfort and that is not improving after treatment with steroid creams could require more invasive and costly treatments, such as circumcision. There are many options for surgery, including complete or partial circumcision, preputialplasty, or an emergency circumcision.

The following is a list of preventatives.

There are ways to avoid the occurrence of phimosis. They include gently cleaning your penis every day, using a mild soap, and practicing safe sexual activity.

The majority of boys and infants are born with a tight foreskin covering the head of their penis (glans). This is not abnormal and should not be a cause for anxiety.

As the foreskin ages, it will usually begin to loosen and retract. This process may take a while however, it's something you can expect.

It is recommended to consult your son's doctor if the skin of your child's foreskin becomes too tight. In some instances an appropriate cream could be enough to improve the condition.

In certain instances it is necessary to undergo surgery. This is often called circumcision.
