Biography

Tim Haig was born on May 9, 1983 in the village of Boyle, Alberta. He received a BA from Augustana University College and graduated from the University of Alberta. He practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, in particular, in 2011 he received a purple belt in BJJ.

He made his mixed martial arts debut in September 2006 at the Canadian branch of the King of the Cage promotion, defeating his first opponent in the second round with a guillotine choke. During a year and a half, he won five victories in a row at KOTC and won the organization’s heavyweight title. The first defeat in his career was suffered in February 2008, by a split decision from the Serb Miodrag Petkovic, nevertheless, a few months later he took revenge, defeating Petkovic by unanimous decision.

With nine victories and only one defeat, Haig garnered the attention of America’s biggest promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, in 2009 and made his debut here with a surprise win over veteran pro kickboxer Patrick Barry. However, in the next fight, Todd Duffy was knocked out in seven seconds – this is the fastest knockout in the history of the UFC. In the third fight, he lost to Chris Tachscherer by a very controversial majority decision – commentator Joe Rogan said that this was the worst referee decision he had ever seen in his life. After this defeat, Haig was fired from the organization, but soon returned and put on a replacement in the battle against Joey Beltran. This time there was no disagreement, Beltran had a clear advantage, and all the judges unanimously gave him the victory. The last time Haig fought in the UFC was in September 2011, lost to Matt Mitrion in the first round by TKO and left the organization for good.

Subsequently, Tim Haig performed quite successfully in various less prestigious Canadian and American promotions. He became the champion of the versions of the little-known organizations Unified MMA and XFFC, won three victories in the World Series of Fighting. He twice came to fight in Russia, in 2015 at the League S-70 tournament he was defeated by Evgeny Erokhin, in 2016 at the ACB league tournament he lost to the Pole Michal Andryshak.

On June 16, 2017, in Edmonton, he held a boxing match against Adam Braidwood and, being knocked out, received an intracerebral hemorrhage. He died in hospital two days later.
