"A lot of people get into the habit of exercising in the morning, but you really need to find a time of day that works best for you," says study author Daniel Maurer, a clinical assistant professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

People who ate either more or fewer calories than they expected on certain days had better weight loss outcomes than people who ate what they expected, he says. "You definitely see the power of the schedule for setting up successful behavior," Maurer says.

Losing Weight From the Inside Out?


Several recent studies provide more evidence that factors on the inside may be more important than the foods we eat on the outside when it comes to weight loss. These studies focus on gut health and the microbiome, which is a collection of beneficial bacteria that live in the gastrointestinal tract.

"What we are learning is that these organisms that live inside our gut play a role in our health and weight," says Roseanne Bera, RD, CDN, a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute and the clinic’s food and nutrition policy director.

The relationship between the gut and the rest of the body has been an under-researched area, but these studies suggest that what you eat is a key factor, even more so than your weight, when it comes to maintaining a healthy gut microbiome.


The studies, published in recent years, find that both short- and long-term weight loss interventions cause changes in the microbiome that can persist even after the weight loss is restored, for up to two years after people return to their normal-weight status.

Also, researchers have found that people with a healthy gut microbiome tend to have a healthier metabolism, better weight loss success and maintenance, less inflammation, and greater satisfaction with life and relationships, regardless of weight, according to one study.
