For example, if you wanted to use polyester, you would place the stencil right on top of the polyester.


Obviously, you wouldn't do this with paper as it would be impossible to place the stencil directly on the material without it being crumpled. However, what about a fiberglass material? A fiberglass material looks exactly like paper when printed out, so it would be an easy target for any printer. If the material was printed on regular paper, and then placed on a solid core PCB, the material type would determine whether or not the PCB would have a good surface to support the stencil. So, in a way, fiberglass would be obsolete in printing technology because it is not printable.


So, are stencils obsolete in pcb production? No, they are definitely still used very heavily. Companies still use them, and they are very important for the protection of your design - as well as the quality of your finished product.


So, what happens when a material is selected for production? Often, the person selecting the material type will go out of their way to pick the best material possible for the given job. However, there are limits to such careful decisions. For instance, what happens when you have decided on using glass for the PCB surface? Well, if you are working with a computer graphics project, and want to use a material that can handle reflections and so forth, you might end up with something that is too thick. Or, you might want to use a material with high index of refraction, but because it is too thin, it will buckle under pressure from static electricity.


This is why you need to use material selection wisely. Of course, you will want your products to be as perfect as possible, and so you cannot go too thin or too thick. However, you also need to consider other factors such as compatibility. If you are designing products such as cell phones, you will most likely be designing for a global market. Therefore, compatibility with these devices should be a primary consideration.


To answer the question, "are stencils obsolete in pcb production?" the answer is no, they are still very much used in today's business world. However, they are being used less as designers begin to search for new ways to improve designs and make products more functional. In some cases, the use of stencils may be required, but they should not be the primary way to produce a product.
