The thing is that that type of stuff is so rare that there is no need to overhaul society just for a very small minority. I have joined the light theme war against the dark theme. I apologise in advance if this is not the place to discuss these things; please let me know if this is the case and I’ll take it elsewhere. I mean absolutely no disrespect to transgender people; I am completely in favour of them being treated just like cisgender people are (again, apologies if this is offensive, it’s just the term I’ve heard/read) and of them being socially accepted; at the same time, not being transgender myself, I recognise that I am not in a position to fully grasp what transgender people have to go through all the time and that I am ignorant of what is considered acceptable and what is considered offensive. Again, please let me know if I’m being offensive or inappropriate in any way; I wouldn’t want to repeat such a mistake in the future. I am looking for advice on explaining my view to someone else who is also cisgender but has different views on transgender people. This is a person I greatly care about, so, while I recognise that every person is entitled to their beliefs, I would like to be able to better explain my own. I have discussed the situation of transgender people with this person before, and, while we are both fully accepting of gender fluidity and the right of every person to consider themselves a member of any gender (not necessarily binary) they choose, sex and gender are not quite the same thing. As this person and I understand it, gender is how you identify yourself in terms of what you like, while sex is determined by biology. However, I understand some people do not feel comfortable with their sex, which I guess is where the whole transgender thing comes from. Now, I believe that, if someone would feel happier in a body of a different sex than the one they were assigned at birth and the technology to achieve this (hormone therapy, etc) exists, there is absolutely no reason they should be prohibited from or shunned for using this technology. The other person, on the other hand, believes that we must accept ourselves as we are and that sex-change therapies are akin to cosmetic plastic surgery. How can I explain to this person that I believe otherwise in a way that will make sense and perhaps make them rethink their position? Please do not insult this other person (or me). I am not looking for a fight. This other person would never discriminate someone for being transgender, Binary Options they just don’t believe it’s an important thing for some people. They don’t know I’m bringing up the issue here, and neither they nor I mean any disrespect to anyone. I’m looking for constructive advice on how to deal with a situation involving someone I really care about.
