For two weeks, the participants randomly assigned to the morning group worked out at 10 a.m., while those in the evening group worked out at 6 p.m. People assigned to the control group just didn’t go to the gym — but instead, they were asked to watch a video of the exercise routine on a handheld device.

The researchers found that both morning- and evening-exercising groups lost similar amounts of weight during the trial, but that after the trial’s eight weeks, the evening-exercise group had regained more weight than those who exercised in the morning. This finding seemed to be based on a biological, not a behavioral, reason — meaning that your body doesn’t know what time of day you go to the gym.

The researchers speculated that this could be because your metabolism slows down in the evening and evening exercise helps to burn extra calories later in the night.
