First, researchers surveyed more than 6,000 people who had lost an average of about 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) since dieting in the past. They asked them to keep track of how often they worked out for at least 20 minutes. Then, they checked in with them every three months to find out if they continued to exercise every day.

The people who exercised consistently were more likely to maintain a loss of at least five pounds (2.3 kilograms) over the course of the year.

Researchers think that having to schedule your gym time into your day could help you plan your workouts so you can stick to a consistent exercise routine. Plus, exercising at the same time makes it more likely you’ll see results because your body has more time to burn off calories from your meals if you work out first thing in the morning or when you arrive home from work.

When to exercise:

Exercise in the morning to avoid an afternoon slump.

Exercise at least 30 minutes at roughly the same time each day. Researchers found exercising at that same time may help you create a healthy routine.

Whether you prefer walking, swimming, weight training or running, it’s important to select a form of exercise you enjoy.

If you work out at a gym, try to find a time when most other people are in the same room and working out.
