The Dixons Carphone data breach has been revealed as much larger than previously thought, as hackers accessed up to 10 million customer records. Last month the company announced that 5.9 million customer bank card details and 1.2 million personal data records had been hacked in 2017 and went unnoticed. On Tuesday, the company backtracked on its original figures and amended the total of customer records that had been accessed to a staggering 10 million. The major data breach involved shoppers at Currys PC World and Dixons Travel but bosses insist there is no sign of any related fraud.
Dixons, the retailer behind Currys, previously said that while 5.8 million of the payment cards targeted were protected by chip and pin, around 105,000 non-EU cards without chip and pin protection were compromised. Chief executive Alex Baldock last month described the hack as 'a sophisticated attack' using 'advanced malware'.

In a grovelling apology, he said: 'It is extraordinarily disappointing and I am extremely sorry and I am unhappy we let ... our customers down. ' He said on Tuesday: 'Since our data security review uncovered last year's breach, we've been working around the clock to put it right. 'That's included closing off the unauthorised access, adding new security measures and launching an immediate investigation, which has allowed us to build a fuller understanding of the incident that we're updating on today. 'As a precaution, we're now also contacting all our customers to apologise and advise on the steps they can take to protect themselves. 'Again, we're disappointed in having fallen short here, and very sorry for any distress we've caused our customers. 'I want to assure them that we remain fully committed to making their personal data safe with us.'
