Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel-Lawson (English Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel-Lawson; 1746 or 1747 – June 1820) – British antique dealer and collector of antiquities.

Biography

Adam Cardonnel, born in 1846 or 1847, was the only surviving son of the Mansfeldt de Cardonnel family of Musselborough, Scotland’s Commissioner for Customs and Salt Taxes, and Anne Hilton.

After receiving a medical degree, Cardonnel spent some time in surgical practice. His considerable fortune allowed him to devote a lot of time and money to his hobbies – numismatics, in which he became a specialist, and collecting antiquities. In 1780, with the establishment of the Antique Society of Scotlania, Cardonnel was elected a member, and in 1782-1784 he served as curator. In the second volume of the journal Arch_ologia Scotica published his article „Description of certain Roman Ruins discovered at Inveresk". Cardonnel provided significant assistance to Francis Grose during his visit to Scotland, both accompanying him on his visit to the archaeological site and providing him with descriptions of his extensive collections.

After the death of his relative Hilton Lawson in Northumberland, Cardonell became the sole heir to his fortune and moved from Scotland to England, adding the surname Lawson to the family name. In 1796, he was appointed county sheriff. He spent the last years of his life mainly in Bath, having died in 1820 at the age of 73. Buried June 14, 1820 in Cramlington (Northumberland). His son, also named Adam, died childless in 1838, after which the male line of the clan was interrupted.
