Some are inexpensive plastic stackable shelves; some are laminated modular shelf units; and some are merely boxes with a zippered or flip-front opening. Ford's stated reason was the greater difficulty of achieving acceptable rigidity in a structure with such a large opening at the rear, but the decision more likely reflected the fact that Americans no longer cared much for hatchbacks. A more significant change involved the Town & Country, which was no longer a wagon but a separate series of six- and eight-cylinder sedans and convertibles.

Chrysler-based customs were still around in the late '40s, many built by Derham of Rosemont, Pennsylvania. Volume recovered from the 1934 low of some 36,000 to over 106,000 by 1937, only to drop by half for recession '38; still Chrysler remained ninth.

Returning as base power is GM's 3.6-liter "high feature" twincam 24-valve V-6 with variable valve timing and now a few more horses: 255, up three. Grilles became simpler, taillamps more ornate. The Newport, designed by Ralph Roberts, was an Imperial-based dual-cowl phaeton with "melted-butter" streamlining.

The "white keys" beginning with A will play an A-minor scale: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A. A highlight was getting Mustang named official pace car for the 1964 Indy 500. Though a white convertible with blue dorsal racing stripes led the field on Memorial Day, Ford built another 35 ragtops and some 195 hardtops decked out in the same regalia. Depeche Mode really threw it back in this video which was filmed in black and white.

Available in each series, it bore rear-roof quarters sans side windows, plus front- instead of rear-hinged back doors.

There's no doubt that it is a timeless classic that can transport you back to those great times with your best friends in the '80s. You can sleep in the barn here. Still, since they generally are hundreds of pounds - if not thousands in some cases - lighter than the competition, they can get off the line just as quickly and perform just as well. Still, only 997 were built for the model year, mostly the nine-seat type. The division built only 5292 cars that calendar year and close to 36,000 for the model year.
