To understand what makes for a good exercise routine for weight loss, look no further than the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC recommends engaging in moderate-intensity aerobic activity for at least 150 minutes a week or vigorous aerobic activity for at least 75 minutes a week, and resistance training that incorporates the muscles of the large muscle groups at least two days a week.


When you’re following the ABCs of a healthful diet and regular physical activity, there’s a good chance you’re also experiencing weight loss.

That’s because you’re making healthy changes to what you’re eating and how you’re moving. The other variable that’s important is how your body processes your food, which is determined by genetics, hormones and metabolic status (your resting metabolic rate).

Your overall body fat percentage is another factor, with the goal being to lose 3% to 5% of your body weight. But most people who need to lose weight won’t be able to lose weight by simply eating less and exercising more; they’ll need a little extra help.
