Kurekchay Treaty – an agreement that confirmed the transfer of the Karabakh Khanate to the citizenship of the Russian Empire. The signing ceremony took place on May 14, 1805 in a Russian military camp on the banks of the Kurekchay River, not far from Ganja. The agreement was drawn up in Russian. The treaty was signed by Ibrahim Khalil Khan and the chief infantry general in Georgia P. D. Tsitsianov (on behalf of Emperor Alexander I).

The Kurekchay agreement consists of eleven articles (articles). Article 1, Ibrahim Khan „solemnly and forever denies any vassalage or, under whatever title it was, from any dependence on Persia or another power" and declares that he does not recognize „over himself and my successors any other autocracy, except for the supreme power of E. And. V. All-Russian great GI and His high heirs and successors to the All-Russian Imperial throne „, promising loyalty to the Russian throne" like a loyal servant thereof „and swears in that on the Koran. For his part, the king (that is, Tsitsianov on behalf of the king) guarantees to Ibrahim Khan the integrity of his possessions, complete internal self-government in his khanate and the recognition of the khan’s title for his heirs (Art. 2-3, 5). The khan promises not to enter into relations with the neighboring rulers without the permission of the chief governor of Georgia (Art. 4). The khan undertakes to accept and maintain a Russian garrison of 500 people in the Shusha fortress (Art. 5.6). The Khan undertakes to pay tribute to Russia 8 thousand gold (24 thousand rubles) annually and send his two eldest sons Mamed-Hasanagu and Shukur-Ullah hostage to Tiflis for their permanent stay. The tsar undertakes to allocate 10 silver rubles a day to the grandson of the khan who is being held hostage in Tiflis.

In fact, the article on the internal autonomy of the Karabakh khanate was the only article in favor of the khan – all other articles tended to limit his rights and prerogatives and impose duties on him before the king. The Russian garrison in Shusha was supposed to be a guarantee of obedience, as well as the stay of the khan’s sons in Tiflis. A month after the signing of the treaty (June 8), the khan, and three months later, his sons Mamed Hasan and Mehdi Kuli were awarded the ranks of generals of the Russian service. This fact is confirmed by Russian official sources, as well as local historians Rzagulu bey Mirza Jamal oglu, Mirza Adigezal-bey, Mirza Jamal Javanshir, as well as Abbas Quli-aga Bakikhanov.
