What Is Ductile Iron And How Does It Compare To Other Materials

Ductile materials are those substances that are capable of stretching without breaking, that can be pulled without tearing, that respond rapidly to indentation, compression, and torsion. Rigid and pliable ductile materials are called flexible metals, while materials that are more elastic are called soft metals. The ductile material is one of the key factors in the performance of any type of structure or installation, especially those that are involved with bending, twisting, tension, or compressive forces. Understanding what is ductile can help to determine the appropriate materials for any application, including construction, marine, architectural, and automotive.

Ductile refers to the ability of a material to resist, with little or no elasticity, the forces that it applies to itself, when such forces are applied to it at a high temperature. Since ductile objects are designed to be stretched without breaking, their resistance to heat becomes an important measure of their toughness, which can be an indication of their strength. Ductility measures the amount of twisting force or pressure that is exerted on a metal object at a given temperature and is related to the creep ability or tendency to bend at specific temperatures. While this definition may sound complicated, there are several factors that impact its definition. The type of metal used in fabrication, the process through which the metal is formed, and the nature of the end-user's use all play a role in determining the suitability of any given ductile material.

Carbon steel is considered the purest form of ductile iron, and is the most common raw material used for cold forging, itself a prime example of ductile construction. While carbon steels and alloys differ primarily in terms of the amount of austenitic carbon present in the alloy, they share a number of characteristics in common. They both include the essential properties of high ductility and toughness, with the additional benefit of being low-carbon and having very little carbon content.

Metals such as stainless steel and mild steel possess properties that are considered to be ductile, yet brittle in nature. The low carbon content, coupled with the higher rate of alloy formation, makes stainless steel more brittle and prone to micro-bends. When welding, the tendency for the weld to break is greater with higher carbon content steel. In terms of wear resistance, both stainless steels and ductile iron are well suited to the task. The former is capable of wearing down to just 50% of its original strength, while the latter is capable of maintaining its original strength at nearly 100%. The main difference lies in their chemical makeup, with stainless steel consisting of significantly more carbon than the latter.

Cast iron has the combination of high carbon with higher strength and therefore is the ideal candidate for making large diameter pipes and cast iron grills. The problem with cast iron is that it tends to rust and corrodes in areas where there is a lot of moisture. This corrosion can occur in an enclosed environment, which causes the rusting of the pipe or grill. It can also occur when the metallic part of the part corrodes due to the weather and further brings down the efficiency of the part.

There are other ductile materials that exhibit different degrees of brittleness or deformation. Examples of these include titanium, aluminium, calcium and magnesium alloys, and stainless steel. While each of these possesses the property to withstand stress to a certain extent, they are known to suffer from significant levels of deformation if subjected to harsh conditions.
