    The trailer for the hit sequel, first released in 2019, depicted Cruise's character in the bomber jacket he wore in the 1986 motion picture Top Gun, but the patches for Japan and the Republic of China (the official name of Taiwan) had been replaced by different emblems, The display was initially scrutinized as self-censorship in an effort to appease Chinese censors, as Beijing views Taiwan as a part of its territory.
    The display of a Taiwanese flag in Top Gun: Maverick could mark a sea change in how studios react to political implications from China.

    'There have been several recent instances of big-budget U.S. films not getting into the Chinese market,' Hollywood Made in China author Aynne Kokas told CNBC. 'Studios are aware of this and are making business decisions.
    'Particularly for a film like Top Gun: Maverick, a tribute to the U.S. military released in time for the Memorial Day holiday in the U.S., there is a clear incentive to play to the film's most reliable audience constituencies and it appears to have paid off financially.'
    Motion pictures including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals have not been released in China following comments from involved parties critical of China.





    Glen Powell, who plays Lt. Jake 'Hangman' Seresin in the movie, donned a black polo shirt and brown slacks with brown shoes
