LONDON — Theresa May has the support of Conservative MPs "at the moment," the man representing backbenchers has said.

The prime minister told journalists last week that she will lead the party into the next general election, despite previously telling her MPs that she would only stay as long as they wanted her to.

When asked about the comments today, the chair of the 1922 committee, Graham Brady, told the BBC May's position was "subject to the support of colleagues."

Asked if May had the support of MPs to lead them into another general election, he replied: "If my colleagues are then I am."

He then added: "At the moment we are solidly behind Theresa May."
